I want a hydraulic press, but I don’t want to pay for one. I figured I could fabricate one relatively cheaply. Then Princess Auto had a 12-Ton press for about the cost of the steel ($129 – 2015). Except it just wasn’t as sturdy as I wanted. So…..
Materials:
- 20′ – 5″ channel iron cut into:
- 2 @ 5’6″
- 4 @ 2’3″
- 1/2″ plate 8×12″ (two)
- 2x2x1/4″ square tube – ~2′ long
- 2x2x3/16″ angle iron – ~3′ long (two)
- 1″ SCH40 pipe, ~2′ long
- 2-1/2×1/4″ flat, ~8″ long, bent 90° at each end (two)
- 2″ round, welded to the center of the 2×2 tube, counterbored
- 3/8″ eye bolts
- Press return springs (two)
- 3/4×8 grade 8 bolts (two)
- 1/2×6″ grade 8 bolts (eight)
- 1/2×2″ grade 8 bolts (twelve)
When it was all done, I was into it for well over $200 (2016). Was it worth it? Hmmmm……
Upgraded to an Air/Hydraulic bottle jack, and decided to produce plans and a video.
